HISTORY.
Adopted by a duo of female ex-warriors from Fanow into a household numbering nearly in the double digits, this Viera was a sickly child who could barely maintain a healthy countenance. As such, he has always been babied by his mothers and sisters; not that he minded, however, as he always preferred the company of books over his much more extroverted sisters. Growing up more sheltered and less looked-after once his older siblings grew older enough to venture out into the Greatwood, Verlan would dabble in various studies from a young age, learning to offset the troubling pains after taking an interest in natural healing remedies, herbal antidotes, and therapeutics.His health would gradually worsen over time to the point of constant bedrest, fainting spells and, arguably the worst: the failure of his own remedies. Desperate to relieve him of his pain, his mothers would turn to the Crystal Exarch for advice. Upon learning of rumors of inter-world travel to other locations with possible cures, they would try their best to keep this a secret from their son; but to no avail, as their son was too clever, too inquisitive. Verlan would confront the Exarch himself after finding the strength to travel, where he learned of the secrets of blood and the "soul vessel".Constant research and working with the Exarch's trusted Nu Mou companion, Beq Lugg, would lead to the development of a preliminary version of the "soul vessel", which Verlan would use on himself to test the theory of inter-world travel. Most unfortunate, things did not go as planned- as expected of research, but especially not in the ways he would expect. The Rava would find himself traversing two unknown shards with nothing but the knowledge he's amassed from literature, and the occasional non-human companion or two.To this day, the erudite Rava keeps to himself, travelling between the world's rifts in limited bouts, lest he destroys his already weakened body. A curious contract between him and a serpentine voidsent keeps his illness at bay; but for how long, who can say?
PERSONALITY.Key traits: silver-tongued, perfectionist, eccentric. A pathological liar, yet meek.A direct, idealistic and two-faced alchemist who dabbles in dark magic to cure himself of the illness that has robbed him of many years.On the surface, Verlan is a soft-spoken, humble, and easygoing man, particularly enamored with medicine. He is not one to refuse a passerby of a cure, but tends to keep his dealings private, away from prying eyes. His fascination with the biology of living and non-living subjects nigh borders lunacy, but it is well-preserved.Despite his kind-looking surface, however, Verlan hides a more sinister nature that has resulted from a mixture of self-imposed guilt and desperation. He actively searches for a way to cure himself of the illness that has robbed him of many years; but, in his pursuits, he is bitterly aware that these desperate efforts may have only lessened his lifespan even further. When confronted with his mortality, like most, he gloomily avoids the thought; but unlike most, he is fanatically obsessed with finding an answer to an alarming degree, willing to perform experimentation (and worse) on himself and others."If one day your brain shows symptoms of dullness, then please give the doctor a call."

i. DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

" Observation Log- Day: 28. Surrounding weather: "Vacuity"- unusual turbulence in voidal pressure. Umbral-aspected aether levels: maximum. Minimal threat: lesser "voidsent" lifeforms identified. Number of major threats: one. Hypothesis: relation between common voidsent and ███ is plausible. New self-reported symptoms: paresthesia, grade 2- moderate- hurts. Vasovagal reaction and hypertension intermittent. Unable to record any longer. Assume the worst if no further entries. -V.E. [XXXX]
The first shard that this doctor successfully travelled to was the Thirteenth; but if you ask him if it was a success, he would likely deny it. Whether his methods resulted in something accidental, or if it was a strange "calling" by an unknown force, he does not know. However, it may as well be the latter, as he would sign a pact with a voidsent that he dubs "Nehebkau": a dreadful, serpent-like being that promised to grant him immunity from death and alleviate his pain. In exchange- the demon would use his body as a vessel to sate his thirst, and travel throughout other shards to feed upon more poor souls with an overabundance of aether. The most proper term to attribute to this relationship is parasitical. Which party benefits the most? It's up to interpretation.
(It will end in Doctor Excelsa's premature death regardless.)
ii. (MAL)PRACTITIONER
While not officially recognized as a legal practitioner (likely due to his ever-travelling nature), this Rava has equivalent knowledge and mastery over conjury, summoning, and regenerative magicks; well enough to be considered a top-tier physician. However, these magicks are more dubious than normal; those said to have been "healed" by him often report the process as draining, fatiguing, and overall unpleasant, as if one's soul was being "stitched" back together. If this describes his healing process, then, one could imagine the extent of his magical prowess on a deadlier scale as something to be feared and constantly avoided; especially if the rumors of personal self-experimentation are true.
iii. SYLVAN SMOKE.
Married to his isolationist habits of avoiding crowds and those especially talented with aethersight, Verlan's fanatical fascination with the plentiful academic institutions across Eorzea elevated his understanding of both human and non-human subjects, alike. Well-traveled and ever in pursuit of magicks to practice, the doctor found a particular interest in Old Sharlayan, constantly journeying between the city itself and the underground of Labyrinthos, befriending many a gleaner and botanist. Among his other favorites are the Holy See of Ishgard's Scholasticate, and Old Sharlayan's Noumenon library. An amalgamation of the sciences and the arts from these institutes is the likely reason of how the scientist implemented the biochemistry of the elements into his "lifeweaving", done in a uniquely-developed censer.
⤷ A gloved hand reaches out from the shadows, swirling with the woodsy efflux of incense. Save for the golden glow of a thurible reflecting along the walls of the cluttered dwelling, a sullen gaze behind a monocle awakens with interest; a rare sight for sore eyes. The tiresome, ever-volatile ebb and flow of research; while daunting to many, it is a welcome challenge to the Rava.
